01 / What the data shows

A diverse stock

At the end of 2025, 33,612,650 vehicles were registered. Cars represented 51.7%, motorcycles 21.2% and vans 14.6%. These are stock shares, not new sales.

02 / What the data shows

Different age profiles

Average age was 14.2 years overall. Selected types ranged from 9.9 years for motorcycles to 24.9 for tractors.

03 / What the data shows

Stock, sales and transfers

New registrations, second-hand transfers and total stock measure different processes. These figures do not directly forecast replacement demand.

04 / What the data shows

Sector implications

Service planning also needs usage, region, fuel and technical-condition data. Age alone does not establish safety or maintenance condition.

05 / Scope and comparability

A growing fleet over five years

The registered fleet grew from 25.25 million in 2021 to 33.61 million in 2025, about 33.1%. Motorcycles’ share rose from 14.8% to 21.2%, a 6.4-point increase. Administrative corrections can make stock differences differ from registrations less deregistrations.

06 / Scope and comparability

Net additions to the fleet

There were 2,368,538 registrations and 55,907 deregistrations in 2025, giving net additions of 2,312,631. Entries and exits occur simultaneously; low deregistrations do not prove continuous vehicle use.

07 / Scope and comparability

Separate new technology from the installed fleet

Diesel, petrol and LPG account for a rounded 93.6% of the 2025 car fleet; hybrids 4.0% and electric cars 2.1%. Fleet shares differ from new-sales shares. Service and charging planning should track both.

08 / Scope and comparability

Method and calculations

Calculations use the published values shown in the data notes. A relative change divides the difference by the initial value; a percentage-point gap subtracts two rates. No adjustment for age, geography or other group characteristics has been applied. Different periods and denominators must be considered before making comparisons.

51.7 + 21.2 + 14.6 = 87.5%; 100 − 87.5 = 12.5%; 24.9 − 9.9 = 15 (2025).

09 / Scope and comparability

The next research step

Cross vehicle types with age bands, fuel and geography, then add usage intensity and new registrations. Fleet age alone does not determine replacement timing, technical safety or the size of an aftersales market.

010 / Scope and comparability

Average fleet age over time

The verified archive contains 5 observations for 2021–2025. It starts at 14.5 and ends at 14.2 Years, an absolute difference of -0.3 Years. Differences in percentage-valued indicators are percentage points, not percentage growth.

The observed minimum is 14.2 in 2025; the maximum is 14.8 in 2022. These are extremes within this archive, not all-time records. Intermediate years reveal whether the path was steady or uneven. The largest absolute year-to-year change is -0.3 in 2023. This subtraction describes movement, not its cause.

Every calendar year in the interval is included. Read the unit, population coverage and vintage together. Co-movement with another indicator does not establish causality. All observations are available in the CSV download; the report links to the original sources.
